Turtle system: Formation stages, current state and development prospects

Abstract: 

The article briefly examines the main historical stages of the formation of the turtle system from the first classifications (the 18th century) to the present day: the pre-evolutionary (? – 1766 – 1870) and evolutionary (1871 – present) ones, and, as part of the latter one, the traditional (1871 – 1975) and phylogenetic (1975 – present) ones. These stages are characterized by the types of reflected relationships, directions of taxonomy, types of used taxa and characters, correspondence between classifications and relationship schemes, taxonomic concepts and nomenclature. At each historical stage, for similar hypotheses of taxon relationships, there were alternative classifications, varying in the above parameters and reflecting different aspects of these relationships.
